A CHOREOGRAPHER'S BIO

As an undergraduate at Stanford University Ms. Whitehurst co-created and directed a dance-theatre group called Bent Spoon Modern Dance Company. She also completed one year of MFA graduate work at the California Institute of the Arts in Dance/Choreography. Last year Ms. Whitehurst performed and toured internationally with Diavolo Dance Theatre, for whom she choreographed a solo piece. She has presented choreographic work in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, the American College Dance Festival and the Dance Camera West Festival.

A VIDEO ARTISTS BIO

Ms. Whitehurst is currently editing a film produced by David Lampson, beautifully shot in Argentina. She recently completed 21 short dance films with her 21Days21Dances project. She has created four dance films, two of which were selected for presentation at the DCW Film Festival, Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and NYC's Dance Film Lab. She also created five narrative shorts for a UCS film program begun in 2002. Most of her projects play with physical movement and soundscape. Ms. Whitehurst's current work, titled "Question&Answer," which combines a traditional script and actors with stop-motion and other silliness, is still in production.

a dance window installation

Oh, the Places We'll Go…, a Rebecca Whitehurst solo dance installation inspired by interviews of NYC apartment dwellers, explores 4 different characters: their stories, their spaces, and their philosophy on 'territory' in the city. The sagas range from a hilarious young man who lives in a piano-shaped room with a shower head directly over his toilet, to an older woman who wouldn’t give up her 1860’s house until she gave up her ghost at 93.
The movement vocabulary and use of space differ for each character, gestures interweave with release and acrobatic choreography. Whimsical use of walls and windows define, as Whitehurst embodies the varied thoughts and feelings on living space. Passersby will be able to hear the interviews, witness Whitehurst's accompanying performance, and--if inclined--share their own stories by slips of paper (saga slips) and a box that sit outside the window.

Tenri Cultural Institute of NYC. Produced by Teresa Wimmer. Collaborators, performers and musicians include: Catherine Bent, Michael Fennelly, Bill Kalinkos, Ursel Schlicht, Paul Geluso, Emma Cotter, Caron Eule, Kimberly Lantz and Alexa Weir.
